What Is 10KW Split Phase Inverter and How Does It Work?

In some countries and regions, residential and commercial electricity use a dual voltage power supply standard. Markets like Venezuela, Mexico, and Brazil require 110V/120V for lighting and low power appliances, and 220V/240V to drive high power loads such as air conditioners, water pumps, and electric stoves. To meet the requirements of this dual voltage standard, split phase inverter can stably output 120V/240V or 110V/220V split phase voltage. A single system can cover loads of different voltage levels throughout the house, making it widely used in residential, farm, and small scale commercial solar system in dual voltage countries, and has become the mainstream solution in these markets.

In contrast, single phase inverter, with their single voltage output mode, cannot directly accommodate dual voltage environments. They often require additional step up/step down transformers, or even multiple inverter system, increasing equipment and installation costs, system complexity, and reducing long term operational stability and safety. Xindun Power will provide in depth look at the 10KW split phase inverter in the following article.

What is 10KW split phase inverter?

10KW split phase inverter has rated output power of 10 kilowatts. It primarily converts the direct current (DC) generated by solar panels/battery into alternating current (AC) usable by the load. Unlike typical single phase inverter, it doesn't simply output a single AC voltage. Instead, through internal circuit design, it simultaneously generates two 120V AC outputs, 180° out of phase, creating a standard 240V output between the two phases. For example, in typical 120V/240V system, split phase inverter provides two independent 120V phases. These two phases are grounded via a center tap, creating 240V voltage difference. This split phase output structure allows inverters to meet the needs of lighting and small appliances requiring lower voltages (e.g., 120V) as well as easily power larger equipment, such as washing machines, dryers, and air conditioners that require higher voltages (e.g., 240V).

Why Choose 10KW Split Phase Inverter Instead of Single Phase Inverter?

In countries with dual voltage output, single phase inverter can only output one fixed voltage. When the system contains both low voltage loads and high voltage equipment, additional transformers or multiple inverters are required to achieve voltage matching. However, split phase inverter, by splitting the phase output, can provide two voltages simultaneously from single inverter, eliminating the need for additional step up or step down transformers. This not only reduces energy losses during conversion but also lowers the risk of system failure, resulting in simpler and more reliable overall power supply structure.

What loads can 10KW split phase inverter handle?

10KW split phase inverter has a wide load range, covering various electrical devices in residential and small commercial settings. Based on voltage requirements, it can be divided into two main categories:

120V/110V Low Voltage Loads: 10KW split phase inverter can easily handle everyday household power needs, such as lighting, TV, refrigerators, microwave ovens, computers, and other common small appliances. These loads typically have power output ranging from a few watts to several hundred watts, ensuring stable and continuous power supply to meet basic household and work needs.

240V/220V High Voltage Loads: These loads are mostly high power devices with higher voltage and power requirements, which are difficult for traditional single phase inverter to meet. A 10kW split phase inverter can easily handle these loads, such as: residential central air conditioning (1-2 horsepower), electric water heaters (4-6kW), washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, etc. Taking a common household 2-horsepower central air conditioner as example, its operating power is approximately 2-3KW, and the electric water heater's operating power is approximately 4-5KW. When both are running simultaneously, the total power is approximately 6-8KW, still within the 10KW rated power range. The inverter can drive it stably, so there's no need to worry about insufficient load capacity.
